How is IQ measured?
IQ is measured by standardised tests that assess specific cognitive abilities, logical reasoning, pattern recognition, spatial visualisation, verbal comprehension, working memory, and processing speed. These abilities are combined into a single score that is scaled so that 100 represents the population average, with roughly 68% of people scoring between 85 and 115. The score reflects performance relative to other people of the same age group, not a fixed measure of "raw" intelligence.
The history of IQ measurement
The concept of a standardised intelligence score was developed by French psychologist Alfred Binet in 1905, who created the first practical intelligence scale to identify children who needed educational support. German psychologist William Stern later introduced the Intelligence Quotient formula:
IQ = (Mental Age ÷ Chronological Age) × 100
This original formula has since been replaced by deviation IQ, which compares your score to a statistical distribution of scores from a reference population of the same age. Modern IQ tests no longer use mental age, the deviation approach is more consistent across all age groups.
How modern IQ tests are designed
Modern clinical IQ tests go through a rigorous development process:
1. Item development. Psychologists write hundreds of candidate questions across multiple cognitive domains.
2. Pilot testing. Questions are tested on representative samples to measure difficulty, reliability, and discriminant validity (whether the question actually measures intelligence and not something else).
3. Standardisation (norming). The final test is administered to a large, representative sample, typically 2,000+ people stratified by age, sex, education, and ethnicity. This sample becomes the reference group against which all future test-takers are compared.
4. Reliability analysis. Test-retest reliability is measured: the same people take the test twice, weeks apart. Good IQ tests achieve reliability coefficients above 0.90.
What IQ tests actually measure
The most widely used IQ tests (WAIS-IV, Stanford-Binet 5, and the Cattell-Horn-Carroll battery) measure four to six broad cognitive abilities:

How IQ scores are scaled
IQ scores are scaled to a normal distribution (bell curve) with:
- Mean = 100 (population average)
- Standard deviation = 15 (Wechsler scales) or 16 (Stanford-Binet)
This means:
- 68% of people score between 85 and 115 (within 1 SD of the mean)
- 95% score between 70 and 130 (within 2 SDs)
- 99.7% score between 55 and 145 (within 3 SDs)
The scores are periodically renormed to account for the Flynn Effect, the well-documented rise in average IQ scores of about 3 points per decade since the early 20th century.
What IQ does NOT measure
IQ tests measure specific reasoning and processing abilities, they do not measure:
- Creativity or artistic talent
- Emotional intelligence (EQ)
- Wisdom or life experience
- Motivation, work ethic, or resilience
- Domain-specific expertise (e.g., chess mastery, musical ability)
- Social skills or leadership
A high IQ is associated with academic and professional success, but it is not sufficient on its own. Research consistently shows that emotional intelligence, conscientiousness, and interpersonal skills predict real-world outcomes independently of IQ.
Can IQ be improved?
General IQ, particularly fluid intelligence, is moderately heritable (h² ≈ 0.5-0.8 in adulthood) but is also influenced by education, nutrition, health, and cognitive engagement. Research on cognitive training shows that working memory training can improve working memory performance, though the transfer to overall IQ is debated.
What reliably improves IQ test scores: practice with similar question types, better sleep, reduced stress, and familiarity with test formats. These are format effects rather than true intelligence gains, but they are real and measurable.
