Take the Free IQ Test βWhat is an IQ score?
An IQ (Intelligence Quotient) score is a number derived from standardised tests designed to measure cognitive ability relative to your age group. The average is always set at 100, with roughly 68% of the population scoring between 85 and 115. The score is not a fixed measure of your intelligence β it is a snapshot of performance on specific reasoning tasks on a specific day.
IQ tests measure skills such as logical reasoning, spatial visualisation, working memory, verbal comprehension, and processing speed. These are the same categories covered in the free IQ test on this site.
IQ score classification table
Based on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV) classification system β the most widely used IQ scale in the US, UK and Australia.
| IQ Range | Classification | Percentile |
|---|---|---|
| 130+ | Very Superior / Gifted | Top 2% |
| 120β129 | Superior | Top 9% |
| 110β119 | High Average | Top 25% |
| 90β109 | Average | 25thβ75th |
| 80β89 | Low Average | Bottom 25% |
| 70β79 | Borderline | Bottom 9% |
| Below 70 | Extremely Low | Bottom 2% |
What is a good IQ score?
A score of 100 is exactly average β it sits at the 50th percentile by design. Scores between 90 and 110 are considered "average" and are achieved by roughly half the population. A score above 120 is generally regarded as "superior," while anything above 130 places you in the top 2% and is classified as "very superior" or "gifted." Whether a score is "good" depends entirely on context: 115 is high for most purposes but average for a competitive academic institution.
Keep in mind that a single online test is an estimate, not a clinical measurement. Professional IQ assessments (such as the WAIS-IV or Stanford-Binet) are conducted by licensed psychologists and provide the most accurate results.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average IQ score?+
The average IQ score is exactly 100, by design. IQ scales are periodically renormed so that 100 always represents the population midpoint. Scores between 90 and 110 are considered 'average' and cover roughly 50% of the population.
What is a good IQ score?+
A score above 110 is above average. Above 120 is 'superior'. Above 130 places you in the top 2% and is classified as 'very superior' or 'gifted'. What counts as 'good' depends on context.
Can I trust my online IQ score?+
Online IQ tests give a useful estimate, but they are not clinically validated. Scores can vary by 10β15 points between tests depending on format, difficulty calibration, and the day you take them. Treat the result as a ballpark, not a fixed measurement.
What factors affect IQ scores?+
Sleep quality, stress, familiarity with the question format, time of day, and test anxiety all affect performance on cognitive tests. IQ is also influenced by genetics, education, and environment over time.
