Do not treat an IQ score as a fixed label. Key principles for parents:
- Context matters — a single score without the full report and psychologist interpretation is incomplete
- Subtest scatter — children often have significant strengths and weaknesses within the test; the composite score may obscure important information
- Stability is lower in younger children — scores before age 8 are particularly provisional
- Environment shapes outcomes — IQ predicts but does not determine educational and life outcomes
Should you prepare your child for an IQ test?
Do not coach your child on specific test content. This can artificially inflate scores, making it harder to get appropriate support or accurate placement. It is helpful to:
- Ensure the child is well-rested the day of testing
- Explain honestly that the doctor is "checking how you think" — not a test they can pass or fail
- Reduce anxiety by framing it as curious and safe
Are online IQ tests valid for children?

Can a child with high IQ have a learning disability?
Yes. This is called "twice-exceptional" (2e). A child may have an IQ of 140 and also have dyslexia or ADHD. The high IQ can mask the learning disability, or vice versa, making identification and support more complex.
